Description

Planting Conditions and Growing Environment

  • Light Requirements: 'Walker’s Low' thrives in full sun. It can tolerate partial shade, but flowering and compactness may decrease with less light.

  • Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It performs well in sandy, gravelly, or rocky conditions. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils, which may cause root rot.

  • Moisture Needs: Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant. Young plants need regular watering during the first growing season. Avoid overwatering and soggy soil.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn, giving roots time to establish in mild conditions before summer heat or winter cold.

  • Ideal Location: Excellent for sunny borders, cottage gardens, rockeries, or wildlife gardens. Its billowing habit makes it ideal for softening hard edges like paths, steps, or low walls.

  • Spacing: Allow 18 to 24 inches between plants to accommodate its mature spread and ensure good air circulation.

Care, Pruning, and Maintenance

  • Watering: During the first season, water regularly to establish a healthy root system. After that, occasional deep watering is sufficient during dry periods.

  • Feeding: Catmint does not need heavy fertilization. In early spring, apply a light dose of balanced fertilizer or a top-dressing of compost to support healthy growth.

  • Mulching: A light mulch helps retain moisture and reduce weed competition. Keep mulch away from the crown to prevent rot.

  • Pruning: After the first flush of blooms fades (typically midsummer), shear the plant back by one-third to one-half. This encourages compact regrowth and a second round of flowering.

  • Deadheading: While not essential due to its self-cleaning nature, occasional removal of spent blooms may improve appearance and stimulate more flowers.

  • Winter Cleanup: Cut back dead stems to ground level in late autumn or early spring. In colder zones, mulch lightly for added root protection during winter.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Very low-maintenance and resistant to most pests and diseases. Does not suffer from mildew or fungal problems in normal conditions.

  • Animal Resistance: Strongly aromatic foliage makes it unpalatable to deer and rabbits.

Appearance, Seasonal Highlights, and Design Use

  • Flowering: Produces an abundance of lavender-blue flowers from late spring through early autumn. Flowering is especially long-lasting with regular shearing.

  • Foliage: Soft, silvery-green, aromatic foliage provides excellent texture and contrast. When crushed, the leaves release a pleasant minty fragrance.

  • Growth Habit and Size: Forms a spreading, mounded clump up to 24–30 inches tall and 30–36 inches wide. Its arching habit creates a relaxed, flowing look in the garden.

  • Pollinator Friendly: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife or pollinator-friendly gardens.

  • Design Uses: Perfect for edging borders, mass planting, underplanting roses, or softening walkways. Combines beautifully with salvia, coreopsis, grasses, and lavender.

  • Container Growth: Suitable for large pots in sunny locations. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overly rich soil to maintain a compact habit.

  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 3–8 (UK H7). It’s frost-hardy, heat-tolerant, and suitable for a wide range of climates.
