Description

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant' thrives in full sun. It can tolerate partial shade, but full sun ensures better flowering and a more compact growth habit.

  • Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soils. It performs well in light, sandy, or gravelly soils. Avoid wet, poorly drained locations, which can cause root rot.

  • Moisture Needs: Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant. Water regularly during the first growing season, but allow the soil to dry between waterings thereafter.

  • Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn to allow the root system time to settle before extreme temperatures.

  • Spacing: Allow at least 24 to 36 inches between plants. 'Six Hills Giant' is a vigorous spreader and needs space to develop its natural mounding form.

  • Positioning Tips: Ideal for sunny borders, cottage gardens, wildlife plantings, and dry gardens. Works beautifully near paths or over low walls, where the soft stems can spill gently.

Routine Maintenance and Seasonal Care

  • Watering: Low water requirements once mature. Water deeply during extended dry spells, especially in very hot climates.

  • Feeding: This is a light feeder. Apply a general-purpose fertilizer in early spring or top-dress with compost to promote healthy growth. Avoid excessive feeding, which can lead to weak, leggy stems.

  • Mulching: A thin mulch layer helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds, especially in dry soils. Keep mulch away from the crown to avoid rotting.

  • Pruning: After the first major flowering flush in early summer, shear back by half to promote a second bloom and encourage bushy regrowth.

  • Deadheading: Not strictly necessary, but trimming spent flowers improves appearance and can extend blooming into late summer.

  • End-of-Season Cleanup: Cut plants back to the ground in autumn or early spring. New growth will emerge from the base in spring.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Extremely pest- and disease-resistant. Rarely troubled by any issues in well-drained conditions.

  • Animal Resistance: Highly deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its aromatic foliage, making it a reliable option in rural or open gardens.

Ornamental Qualities and Garden Uses

  • Flowers: Produces dense spikes of soft lavender-blue flowers from late spring through mid to late summer. Flowering is long-lasting and abundant with regular trimming.

  • Foliage: Grey-green, aromatic leaves are finely textured and softly fuzzy. The foliage is fragrant when touched and contributes to the plant’s resistance to pests.

  • Growth Habit and Size: Forms a large, billowing mound, growing up to 36 inches tall and 48 inches wide. Its vigorous spread makes it ideal for large beds and drifts.

  • Pollinator Appeal: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. A great addition to wildlife-friendly and naturalistic garden designs.

  • Design Uses: Excellent for softening hard edges, planting en masse, or pairing with roses, salvia, alliums, and ornamental grasses. A staple in cottage gardens and Mediterranean-style landscapes.

  • Companion Planting: Combines well with drought-tolerant plants like lavender, thyme, sedum, coreopsis, and echinacea.

  • Container Growth: Can be grown in large containers in full sun with good drainage, but its spreading nature is better suited to in-ground planting.

  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9 (UK H7), tolerating both cold winters and hot, dry summers once established.
