Nepeta × faassenii – Planting & Care Guide
About Nepeta × faassenii

Nepeta × faassenii, commonly known as Catmint, is a hardy, long-flowering perennial prized for its masses of soft lavender-blue flowers and aromatic silver-green foliage. Blooming from late spring through to early autumn, it creates a beautiful haze of colour that complements both traditional and contemporary planting schemes.

Growing to approximately 30–60cm tall with a spread of 60–90cm, Nepeta × faassenii forms neat, spreading mounds of fragrant foliage that soften the edges of borders and pathways. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects, making it one of the best perennials for wildlife-friendly gardens. Its drought tolerance and low-maintenance nature also make it an excellent choice for modern gardens.

Planting Guide
Plant in full sun for the best flowering display.
Will tolerate light partial shade.
Prefers well-drained soil.
Thrives in loam, sandy and chalky soils.
Improve heavy clay soils by adding compost and horticultural grit before planting.
Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
Apply a light mulch around the base, keeping the crown clear.
Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart.
Care & Maintenance

Nepeta × faassenii is exceptionally easy to grow and requires very little maintenance.

Water regularly during the first growing season.
Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.
Avoid prolonged waterlogging during winter.
Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
Avoid excessive feeding, which can reduce flowering.
Remove weeds regularly while plants establish.
Water container-grown plants when the compost begins to dry.
Divide mature clumps every 3–5 years to maintain vigour.
Pruning

Regular pruning encourages a long flowering season.

Shear plants back by around one-third after the first flush of flowers.
Deadhead faded flowers to encourage repeat blooming.
Remove damaged or dead stems throughout the growing season.
Cut plants back to ground level in late autumn or early spring.
Trim lightly during the season to maintain a compact, tidy shape.
