Overview & Features

• Paeonia suffruticosa, commonly known as Tree Peony, is a deciduous woody shrub prized for its exceptionally large, luxurious blooms.

• Produces spectacular flowers in shades of white, pink, red, purple, or yellow depending on the variety.

• Blooms appear in mid to late spring and can measure 15–25 cm across.

• Lightly to richly fragrant flowers with delicate, tissue-like petals.

• Forms a woody framework rather than dying back to ground level each year.

• Typically grows to 120–150 cm in height and spread over time.

• Attractive, divided foliage provides texture through the growing season.

• Ideal as a specimen plant in borders or sheltered garden settings.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun or light partial shade.

• Prefers a sheltered position protected from strong winds.

• Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

• Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, especially in winter.

• Improve soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

• Plant grafted specimens deeply enough so the graft union sits 10–15 cm below soil level.

• Space plants 100–150 cm apart to allow for mature growth.

• Avoid planting in exposed frost pockets.

Tree peonies dislike disturbance and should be positioned carefully from the start.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots.

• Keep soil evenly moist during active growth and flowering.

• Avoid overwatering or winter waterlogging.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote strong growth and blooms.

• Apply a mulch of compost in spring, keeping it away from the base of stems.

• Flowering typically occurs in mid to late spring.

• Remove spent blooms to maintain a tidy appearance and conserve plant energy.

Consistent moisture in spring supports larger, healthier flowers.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Remove dead or damaged wood in early spring.

• Lightly shape after flowering if necessary, but avoid heavy pruning.

• Do not cut back like herbaceous peonies, as stems are woody and permanent.

• Remove any suckers growing from below the graft point.

• Apply mulch annually to improve soil structure and conserve moisture.

• Protect flower buds from late frosts if possible.

• Generally long-lived and low maintenance once established.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
