Planting Patio Pear ‘Conference’
Patio Pear ‘Conference’ is a compact fruit tree selected for growing in containers or smaller gardens. It produces white spring blossom followed by elongated, greenish-brown pears with sweet, juicy flesh. ‘Conference’ is partly self-fertile and can produce fruit when grown alone, although a compatible pear flowering nearby may improve pollination and increase the crop.
- Choose a warm, sheltered position receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Good light helps the fruit ripen and develops its flavour.
- Protect the tree from strong winds and severe late frost. A sheltered patio, courtyard or sunny wall is suitable, provided air can circulate around the branches.
- Use a large, stable container with generous drainage holes. A pot approximately 45–60 cm wide provides room for the root system and reduces the risk of the tree becoming unstable.
- Fill the container with loam-based compost mixed with well-rotted organic matter and horticultural grit. Avoid lightweight compost that dries too quickly.
- Before planting, soak the root ball thoroughly. Position the tree at the same depth at which it was growing in its original container.
- Keep the graft union, visible as a swelling near the base of the trunk, clearly above the compost surface. Buried grafts can produce unwanted rooting and overly vigorous growth.
- Firm the compost gently, water generously and leave a small gap beneath the pot rim to make future watering easier.
- Raise the container on pot feet to improve drainage. Stake the tree if necessary, using a soft tie that will not damage the trunk.
- If planting in the ground, use fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and allow enough space for the tree’s expected size.
Watering, Feeding and Fruit Development
Container-grown pear trees depend on regular watering and feeding because their roots cannot search beyond the pot. Inconsistent moisture can reduce fruit size or cause young pears to drop.
- Check the compost frequently from spring through autumn. Water when the upper layer begins to feel dry, soaking the complete root ball thoroughly.
- Increase watering during flowering, fruit swelling and hot weather. A mature patio tree may require daily attention during warm, windy periods.
- Allow excess moisture to drain and never leave the pot standing permanently in water. Reduce watering during winter without letting the root ball dry completely.
- Apply a balanced, slow-release fruit-tree fertiliser in early spring. Follow with a high-potassium liquid feed every two weeks once flowering finishes and fruit begins developing.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen because it encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
- Mulch the compost surface with well-rotted organic matter, keeping it away from the trunk and graft union.
- Encourage pollinating insects by avoiding insecticide treatments while the tree is flowering. Another compatible pear nearby can improve fruit set.
- Thin crowded fruitlets in early summer, leaving one or two pears in each cluster. Thinning improves fruit size and prevents branches from becoming overloaded.
- Harvest when the pears separate easily with a gentle lift and twist. ‘Conference’ pears often finish ripening after picking.
Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance
Pruning keeps a patio pear compact, well balanced and productive. The aim is to maintain an open framework while preserving short fruiting spurs.
- Complete the main structural pruning during winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, diseased, crossing or inward-growing branches.
- Shorten the previous season’s main growth by approximately one-third, cutting just above an outward-facing bud.
- Prune side shoots during summer to control vigorous growth. Shorten them to around three leaves beyond the basal cluster.
- Do not remove the short, knobbly fruiting spurs unless they are overcrowded, damaged or unproductive.
- Remove shoots growing from below the graft union as soon as they appear. These originate from the rootstock and can weaken the named variety.
- Rotate the container periodically so every side receives similar light. This supports balanced growth and even fruit ripening.
- Check regularly for aphids, pear leaf blister mite, caterpillars and scale insects. Remove badly affected leaves or shoots promptly.
- Inspect fruit for signs of pear scab, brown rot and codling moth. Clear fallen leaves and damaged fruit from around the pot.
- Repot every two or three years during dormancy, or replace the upper compost layer annually when moving the tree is impractical.
- Protect the container from prolonged freezing conditions by insulating the pot while leaving the dormant crown outdoors.
- With full sun, dependable watering, regular feeding and careful pruning, Patio Pear ‘Conference’ will provide spring blossom and rewarding crops in a compact space
