About Phlox 'Famous Purple'

Phlox 'Famous Purple', part of the compact Famous Series of Garden Phlox, is a colourful herbaceous perennial producing generous clusters of vibrant purple flowers above attractive green foliage. Its naturally compact, bushy habit makes it particularly useful where a traditional tall Phlox would be too large.

Flowering for an extended period from mid-summer into early autumn, 'Famous Purple' provides valuable late-season colour and is attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Growing to approximately 40–50cm tall with a spread of around 35–45cm, it is excellent for the front or middle of borders and performs particularly well in patio containers.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun or light partial shade.
• Full sun generally produces the strongest flowering.
• Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
• Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
• Avoid positions that become excessively dry during summer.
• Dig a planting hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
• Position the plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container.
• Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.
• Apply an organic mulch around the plant to conserve moisture.
• Space plants approximately 35–45cm apart to maintain good air circulation.

Care & Maintenance

Phlox 'Famous Purple' performs best when the soil is kept reasonably moist throughout the growing season.

• Water regularly during the first year after planting.
• Water established plants during prolonged dry periods.
• Avoid repeatedly allowing the soil to dry out while plants are flowering.
• Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring.
• Apply compost or well-rotted organic matter around established plants each spring.
• Water at soil level rather than regularly wetting the foliage.
• Maintain good air circulation between plants.

Pruning

Regular deadheading helps maintain a tidy appearance and can prolong the flowering display.

• Remove faded flower clusters throughout summer.
• Trim damaged or unhealthy foliage when necessary.
• Cut stems down to ground level once they die back in late autumn.
• Alternatively, leave the old stems over winter and cut them back in early spring.
• Divide congested clumps approximately every 3–4 years to maintain vigorous growth.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
