Care, Maintenance, and Seasonal Advice
-
Pruning:
-
Light pruning in spring or early summer after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages new red growth.
-
Trim back lightly at any time to keep compact form.
-
Avoid heavy pruning in late autumn, as this may expose the plant to winter damage.
-
-
Feeding and Mulching:
-
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to boost healthy growth.
-
Mulch annually with organic matter to conserve moisture and nourish the soil.
-
-
Seasonal Interest:
-
Spring: Fresh flush of fiery red foliage with clusters of white flowers.
-
Summer: Mature foliage darkens to rich green while new red shoots continue to appear.
-
Autumn: Retains evergreen foliage, ensuring structure and colour in the garden.
-
Winter: Dense habit and glossy leaves provide year-round appeal, even in bare landscapes.
-
-
Pests and Diseases:
-
May occasionally suffer from leaf spot, but this is usually minor. Good air circulation and careful watering help prevent issues.
-
Relatively pest-resistant and low-maintenance compared to many shrubs.
-
-
General Advice:
-
Hardy across much of the UK and Ireland.
-
Shelter young plants from harsh winds in their first year.
-
An excellent choice for gardeners seeking both colour and structure with minimal upkeep.
