Positioning and Planting
Photinia ‘Red Robin’ thrives in a sunny, well-drained position, and it’s versatile enough to suit a range of garden styles.
Light Requirements:
Prefers full sun to partial shade
Best colour on new leaves is achieved in full sun
Soil Preferences:
Grows in most fertile, well-drained soils
Tolerates clay, loam, or sandy soils
Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged areas
Planting Tips (80–100 cm size):
Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball
Mix in compost or well-rotted manure for soil improvement
Plant at the same depth as it was in the pot
Firm in and water thoroughly
Space plants approx. 60–90 cm apart for hedging
Watering, Feeding, and Ongoing Care
While Photinia is low maintenance, it benefits from seasonal feeding and occasional pruning.
Watering:
Water well during the first growing season after planting
Established plants are fairly drought-tolerant, but water during extended dry spells
Container-grown plants require more frequent watering
Feeding:
Feed in early spring with a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser
Apply a balanced liquid feed monthly in the growing season if desired
Mulching:
Apply a mulch of bark or compost in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds
Pruning:
Trim in late spring or early summer after the red growth appears
Can be pruned again in late summer to shape and encourage new flushes of red foliage
For hedging, prune 2–3 times a year to maintain neatness and density
Design Uses and Companions
Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is extremely versatile in design and works well in both formal and informal settings.
Best Uses:
Hedges and screens
Specimen shrubs in borders or lawn centrepieces
Container planting for patios or entranceways
Mixed shrub borders for colour and structure
Good Companions:
Mix with Euonymus, Hebe, Pittosporum, Griselinia, or Box for evergreen contrast
Underplant with spring bulbs or hardy geraniums
Use with lavender or ornamental grasses for contemporary settings
Hardiness, Pests, and Other Notes
Hardiness:
Fully hardy in most parts of the UK and Ireland (RHS H5)
Tolerates frost and urban pollution
Pests and Diseases:
Occasionally affected by leaf spot (Entomosporium) – prune to increase airflow and remove infected leaves
Generally pest-free if grown in well-ventilated, sunny sites
Top Tip:
Regular pruning not only shapes the plant but also stimulates fresh red growth, extending the colour show into late summer
