Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Phygelius 'Candydrops Tangerine'® performs best in full sun to partial shade. In cooler climates, full sun encourages the best flowering. In hotter regions, light afternoon shade will help protect foliage.

• Soil Preferences: Prefers moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. Enrich the planting area with compost or well-rotted manure to boost organic content and water retention.

• Moisture Needs: Requires regular watering, especially in its first season or during prolonged dry periods. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but will flower more freely with consistent moisture.

• Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn, allowing time for root development before summer heat or winter chill sets in.

• Spacing: Allow 18 to 24 inches between plants. This variety has a compact habit compared to traditional Phygelius, making it ideal for tighter spaces or containers.

• Shelter and Positioning: Choose a sheltered spot, protected from strong winds. It thrives in south- or west-facing borders, containers, or near sunny patios.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering: Water deeply and regularly during dry spells. Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and keep roots cool.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season for strong flowering. A spring application of slow-release fertilizer is also beneficial.

• Mulching: Use a 2–3 inch mulch layer in spring to suppress weeds and regulate soil moisture. In colder regions, mulch also protects roots from frost damage in winter.

• Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage repeat blooming throughout summer and into early autumn. Cut back to a strong pair of leaves. In late winter or early spring, prune back old stems to near ground level to encourage new basal growth.

• Pest and Disease Management: Generally pest-free. Occasionally susceptible to aphids or spider mites—treat with horticultural soap if needed. Ensure good airflow to prevent mildew.

• Cold Protection: Hardy in USDA Zones 7–10 (UK H4–H5). In colder areas, provide winter mulch or fleece to protect the crown. In very cold climates, consider growing in containers that can be moved indoors.

Flowering, Features, and Garden Uses

• Flowering Season: Blooms from late spring through early autumn, offering a long-lasting display.

• Flowers: Produces elegant trumpet-shaped, tangerine-orange flowers held in upright clusters above the foliage. Each bloom is tubular, attracting pollinators and adding vibrant colour to the garden.

• Foliage: Features glossy, dark green leaves with a tidy, compact habit. The foliage forms a low mound, providing a lush backdrop for the flowers.

• Size and Habit: Grows to approximately 18–24 inches tall and wide, with a naturally compact, bushy form. Suitable for small borders and mixed containers.

• Pollinator Appeal: Very attractive to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies thanks to its tubular, nectar-rich flowers.

• Design Uses: Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly planting, or sunny containers. Use near paths or patios to appreciate the long bloom season up close.

• Container Growing: Performs well in pots or planters. Choose a container with good drainage and water regularly during hot periods.

• Companion Plants: Pairs beautifully with salvia, coreopsis, gaura, penstemon, and grasses for a long-flowering, textured display.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
