Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Phygelius Croftway Snow Queen® grows best in full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages maximum flowering, but partial shade helps prevent foliage scorch in very hot climates.

  • Soil Preferences: Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Loamy or sandy soils enriched with compost or organic matter are ideal. It does not tolerate waterlogged conditions—good drainage is essential.

  • Moisture Needs: Requires regular watering, particularly during dry or hot weather. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but flowers best with consistent moisture.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn, allowing roots to establish before seasonal extremes. Container-grown plants can be planted any time, provided the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged.

  • Spacing: Allow 18–24 inches between plants, depending on the desired effect. This gives room for air circulation and space for the plant to reach its natural spread.

  • Positioning Tips: Choose a sheltered site, such as near a south- or west-facing wall, to protect from strong wind and provide warmth for optimal flowering. Great near patios or entrances for up-close enjoyment.

Ongoing Maintenance and Seasonal Care

  • Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, especially during the first growing season. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong root development.

  • Feeding: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks through the growing season. Alternatively, use a slow-release fertilizer in spring to support flowering.

  • Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch mulch layer in spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and insulate roots. Organic mulch like compost or bark is ideal.

  • Pruning: Deadhead regularly to extend the flowering season and encourage continuous bloom. In late winter or early spring, cut back old stems to near the base to rejuvenate the plant.

  • Winter Care: Hardy in USDA Zones 7–10 (UK H4–H5). In colder areas or heavy soils, provide a protective mulch over the crown in winter, or grow in containers and move to a sheltered spot.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally trouble-free. Occasionally susceptible to aphids or spider mites—treat with horticultural soap if needed. Ensure good airflow to avoid mildew or fungal issues.

Appearance, Flowering, and Garden Uses

  • Flowers: Produces elegant creamy-white tubular flowers with a very pale yellow blush and a faint pink tinge at the throat. The flowers are pendent and trumpet-shaped, blooming from late spring through early autumn.

  • Foliage: Deep green, lance-shaped leaves provide a lush backdrop to the blooms. The foliage remains tidy and compact with minimal maintenance.

  • Growth Habit and Size: Forms a compact, bushy clump, reaching 18–24 inches tall and up to 2 feet wide. More restrained and refined in habit compared to older Phygelius varieties.

  • Pollinator-Friendly: The tubular flowers are rich in nectar, making this plant highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

  • Design Uses: Ideal for mixed borders, wildlife-friendly gardens, cottage gardens, or tropical-style planting schemes. It adds long-lasting colour and elegance.

  • Container Planting: Excellent in large pots and planters, especially in cooler climates where winter protection is needed. Ensure containers have good drainage and are not allowed to dry out.

  • Companion Plants: Pairs beautifully with salvia, gaura, penstemon, coreopsis, and ornamental grasses. Contrasts well with darker or silver foliage plants for visual impact.
