Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade but will tolerate full sun in cooler climates. In hotter areas, provide shelter from harsh midday sun to prevent leaf scorch.

• Soil Preferences: Requires acidic, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil rich in organic matter.

• pH Range: Best in pH 4.5–6.5; avoid chalky or alkaline soils. In unsuitable soils, grow in large containers with ericaceous compost.

• Moisture Needs: Likes evenly moist soil—mulching helps retain moisture and keep roots cool. Avoid waterlogging.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn to allow good root establishment before extreme weather.

• Spacing: Allow 1.2–1.5 metres between plants for full growth.

• Positioning Tips: Ideal for shrub borders, woodland-style gardens, or as a specimen in a container. Works beautifully alongside rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias.

• Shelter Needs: Protect from cold, drying winds and late frosts, which can damage young foliage and flower buds.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well during dry spells, especially in the first two years after planting.

  • For container-grown plants, water regularly in summer and ensure pots have good drainage.

• Feeding: Use a slow-release ericaceous fertilizer in spring and again in midsummer to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

• Pruning:

  • Lightly prune after flowering in late spring to maintain shape and encourage new growth.

  • Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm layer of pine bark, leaf mould, or ericaceous compost in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil quality. Keep mulch away from the stem to avoid rot.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally robust, but watch for lace bugs, vine weevils, or leaf spot. Prompt treatment and good airflow help prevent problems.

• Winter Care: Hardy in most of the UK and Ireland but may benefit from fleece protection in severe winters, especially for young plants.

• Container Care: Repot every 2–3 years in fresh ericaceous compost to maintain vigour.

• Foliage: Famous for its brilliant scarlet-red young leaves, which mature through pink to glossy deep green, providing colour over several months.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
