Primula vialii – Planting & Care Guide
About Primula vialii
Primula vialii, commonly known as the Orchid Primrose or Poker Primrose, is a unique and eye-catching herbaceous perennial renowned for its unusual flower spikes. Deep crimson-red buds emerge first before opening into tiny lavender-purple flowers from the base upwards, creating a striking two-tone effect that resembles a glowing poker.
Flowering from early to mid-summer, Primula vialii grows to approximately 30–50cm tall with a spread of 25–35cm. It forms neat clumps of fresh green, lance-shaped foliage that remain attractive throughout the growing season. This moisture-loving perennial is perfect for woodland gardens, damp borders and pond margins, where it provides vibrant colour and attracts bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects.
Planting Guide
- Plant in partial shade or a position with morning sun and afternoon shade.
- Will tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moist.

- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
- Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
