Crocus vernus Mixed Colours – Pack of 30 Bulbs – Planting & Care Guide

About Crocus vernus Mixed Colours

Crocus vernus Mixed Colours, commonly known as Dutch Crocus or Spring Crocus, is a cheerful spring-flowering bulb producing large, goblet-shaped flowers in a beautiful mixture of purple, violet, white and striped shades.

One of the earliest colourful displays of the gardening year, these Crocus emerge towards the end of winter and flower in early spring. Their compact size makes them ideal for planting beneath deciduous trees, through lawns, along border edges and in patio containers.

The early flowers are also particularly valuable to bees and other pollinating insects, providing a useful source of nectar and pollen when relatively few other garden plants are flowering.

Each promotional pack contains 30 bulbs, ideal for creating a colourful naturalised display.

Planting Guide

  • Plant bulbs in autumn, ideally from September to November.
  • Choose a position in full sun or partial shade.
  • Crocus perform best in fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Avoid areas that remain waterlogged during winter.
  • Plant bulbs approximately 7–10cm deep.
  • Position with the pointed end facing upwards.
  • Space bulbs approximately 5–8cm apart.
  • For a natural appearance, plant in informal groups rather than straight rows.
  • Water after planting if the soil is particularly dry.

Planting in Lawns

Crocus vernus is excellent for naturalising through grass.

  • Scatter the bulbs by hand and plant them where they land for a natural effect.
  • Plant approximately 7–10cm deep.
  • Avoid mowing the area immediately after flowering.
  • Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally before mowing.
  • Established bulbs can gradually multiply to create increasingly impressive displays.

Planting in Containers

Crocus are ideal for early-season patio pots and window boxes.

  • Choose a container with good drainage holes.
  • Use good-quality multipurpose compost with added grit for drainage.
  • Plant bulbs relatively close together without allowing them to touch.
  • Position pots in full sun or partial shade.
  • Keep the compost slightly moist but never permanently saturated.

Crocus can also be planted as part of a layered bulb container beneath Tulips or Narcissus.

Care & Maintenance

Crocus require very little attention once established.

  • Water during prolonged dry periods while actively growing.
  • Container-grown bulbs may require more frequent watering.
  • Avoid excessive feeding.
  • A light application of balanced fertiliser after flowering can help established bulbs.
  • Leave foliage untouched after flowering.
  • Allow the leaves to die back naturally before removing them.

Seasonal Interest

  • Fresh shoots begin emerging in late winter.
  • Colourful flowers appear from February into March.
  • Flowers provide valuable early-season food for bees and other pollinators.
  • Narrow green foliage continues growing after flowering.
  • Established bulbs can multiply over time to create larger spring displays.

After Flowering

  • Allow flowers to fade naturally.
  • Do not cut off the green foliage after flowering.
  • Leave the leaves until they have completely yellowed and died back.
  • This allows the bulbs to store energy for the following year's flowers.
  • Crocus planted in borders and lawns can normally remain undisturbed for many years.
  • Congested clumps can be lifted and divided when dormant.

Common Problems

Crocus vernus is generally extremely easy to grow.

  • Waterlogged soil can cause bulbs to rot.
  • Squirrels, mice and other animals may occasionally dig up newly planted bulbs.
  • Poor flowering can occur if foliage is removed too soon after flowering.
  • Bulbs planted in very deep shade may produce fewer flowers.
  • Container-grown bulbs are more vulnerable to drying out during active growth.

With their colourful early-spring flowers, excellent naturalising ability and value to early pollinators, Crocus vernus Mixed Colours – 30 Bulbs are an excellent addition to Irish gardens. Plant them generously through lawns, borders and containers in autumn for a cheerful burst of purple, white and violet as winter comes to an end.
