Tulipa Triumph Red – Pack of 20 Bulbs – Planting & Care Guide

About Tulipa Triumph Red

Tulipa Triumph Red is a classic spring-flowering tulip producing bold, richly coloured red flowers on strong, upright stems. Triumph tulips are among the most popular tulip groups, valued for their reliable flowering, sturdy stems and beautifully shaped blooms.

Flowering in mid-spring, red Triumph tulips create a striking display when planted in groups through borders, beds or patio containers. Their strong stems also make them excellent cut flowers for indoor arrangements.

Each promotional pack contains 20 bulbs, providing enough bulbs to create an impressive spring display.

Planting Guide

  • Plant bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December.
  • November is often an excellent time for tulip planting.
  • Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade.
  • Plant in fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Avoid areas that remain waterlogged during winter.
  • Plant bulbs approximately 10–15cm deep.
  • Position bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
  • Space approximately 8–10cm apart.
  • For the strongest visual effect, plant bulbs together in groups rather than individually.
  • Water after planting if the soil is particularly dry.

Planting in Containers

Triumph tulips are excellent for spring patio displays.

  • Choose a container with adequate drainage holes.
  • Use good-quality multipurpose compost with added grit for drainage.
  • Plant bulbs relatively close together without allowing them to touch.
  • Cover with approximately 10cm of compost.
  • Water after planting.
  • Position the container outdoors in a sunny or lightly shaded location.
  • Avoid allowing pots to remain permanently waterlogged during winter.

For an especially colourful display, tulips can be layered with other spring bulbs such as Narcissus, Muscari and Crocus.

Care & Maintenance

Tulips require very little maintenance once planted.

  • Water during prolonged dry periods in spring.
  • Container-grown bulbs require more regular watering.
  • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser as the foliage develops if desired.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser.
  • Deadhead faded flowers before they form seed.
  • Leave the foliage in place after flowering.
  • Allow leaves to turn yellow and die back naturally before removing them.

Seasonal Interest

  • Bulbs remain dormant underground throughout winter.
  • Fresh green shoots emerge during early spring.
  • Strong stems produce bold red flowers during mid-spring.
  • Flowers make excellent additions to spring bouquets.
  • Foliage continues feeding the bulb after flowering before naturally dying back.

After Flowering

  • Remove faded flower heads but do not remove the leaves while they are still green.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally for approximately six weeks after flowering.
  • Bulbs planted in well-drained garden soil can be left in the ground.
  • Flowering may become less reliable in subsequent years, so many gardeners plant fresh tulip bulbs each autumn for the strongest display.
  • Container-grown bulbs can be lifted once dormant and stored somewhere cool and dry if required.

Common Problems

  • Waterlogging can cause bulbs to rot.
  • Slugs and snails may damage emerging shoots.
  • Squirrels and other animals may occasionally dig up newly planted bulbs.
  • Tulip fire, a fungal disease, can cause distorted growth and spotted foliage.
  • Poor flowering in subsequent years can occur if foliage is removed too soon after flowering.

With their classic red flowers, strong stems and reliable mid-spring display, Tulipa Triumph Red – 20 Bulbs are an excellent choice for adding a bold splash of colour to Irish gardens. Plant the bulbs in autumn in generous groups for an impressive display the following spring
