Rhododendron INKARHO® ‘Lila Dufthecke’ is a fragrant, evergreen shrub producing soft lilac-purple flowers in spring. Thanks to its INKARHO rootstock, it is more tolerant of a wider range of soil conditions than traditional rhododendrons, making it an excellent choice for hedging and general garden planting.

Choosing the right position

• Prefers partial shade to dappled shade
• Can tolerate more sun than standard rhododendrons if soil stays moist
• Ideal for borders, woodland gardens, and informal hedging
• Suitable for a wider range of garden conditions
• Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds

Soil requirements

• More tolerant of neutral and slightly alkaline soils
• Still prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil
• Avoid heavy, waterlogged conditions
• Benefits from soil improved with compost or organic matter
• Ericaceous compost can still be used for best results

How to plant

• Dig a wide hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower
• Soak the root ball thoroughly before planting
• Position the plant slightly above soil level
• Backfill with enriched soil and firm gently
• Water thoroughly after planting
• Space plants around 80–120cm apart for hedging
• Apply a mulch of bark or organic matter

Planting in containers

• Use a large pot with good drainage holes
• Fill with ericaceous or high-quality multi-purpose compost
• Ensure enough space for root development
• Water well after planting
• Place in a sheltered, partially shaded position

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

This variety is easier to care for than standard rhododendrons but still benefits from consistent attention.

Watering

• Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods
• Water regularly during the growing season

• Avoid letting the soil dry out completely
• Ensure good drainage to prevent root issues

Feeding

• Apply a balanced or ericaceous fertiliser in spring
• Mulch annually with compost, bark, or leaf mould
• Container plants benefit from occasional liquid feeding
• Avoid excessive feeding, which can cause soft growth

Pruning

• Requires minimal pruning
• Remove spent flower heads after flowering
• Lightly shape if necessary
• Remove dead or damaged branches
• Can be trimmed to maintain a hedge shape

Mulching

• Apply a mulch in spring to retain moisture
• Helps improve soil structure and suppress weeds
• Use bark, compost, or leaf mould
• Keep mulch away from the base of the plant

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via DPD Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
