Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Grows best in full sun, which ensures strong growth and a sweet, plentiful harvest. Can tolerate partial shade, but yields may be lower.

• Soil Preferences: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil that retains moisture but does not become waterlogged. Sandy loam enriched with organic matter is ideal.

• pH Range: Best grown in slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5).

• Moisture Needs: Consistent soil moisture is important, particularly during flowering and fruiting. Avoid both drought and waterlogging.

• Planting Time: Plant in late autumn or early spring when the soil is workable. Container-grown plants can be planted any time of year if watered well.

• Spacing: Plant canes 45–60 cm apart in rows 1.5–2 m apart to allow easy picking and good airflow.

• Support: While not as tall as summer-fruiting varieties, ‘Autumn Bliss’ still benefits from a simple post-and-wire or cane support system to keep fruit clean and upright.

• Positioning Tips: Ideal for fruit cages, garden borders, or allotments. Protect with netting to deter birds once fruit begins to ripen.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering: Water deeply during dry spells, particularly in summer. Mulching helps retain soil moisture.

• Feeding: In early spring, apply a balanced granular fertilizer or a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to boost growth and yield.

• Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base in spring to retain moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.

• Pruning:

  • As an autumn-fruiting (primocane) variety, cut all canes down to ground level in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge.

  • This promotes strong, healthy new growth that will bear fruit the same year.

• Weeding: Keep the base weed-free to avoid competition for water and nutrients.

• Pest and Disease Management: Generally trouble-free but monitor for aphids, raspberry beetle, and cane blight. Good airflow and clean pruning help prevent disease.

• Winter Care: Hardy in UK and Irish climates. Protect young plants from severe frost with a layer of straw or fleece if needed.

• Propagation: Easily propagated by digging up and transplanting young shoots (suckers) in early spring.

Fruit, Harvesting, and Garden Value

• Fruit Description: Medium to large, rich red berries with a sweet-tart flavour. Firm texture makes them ideal for fresh eating and cooking.

• Fruit Season: Crops from late August through October—sometimes into November in mild years—providing fresh berries when most other soft fruits have finished.

• Harvesting: Pick berries regularly when fully ripe. Frequent picking encourages further fruiting and prevents overripe berries attracting pests.

• Uses:

  • Delicious eaten fresh from the cane.

  • Perfect for jams, jellies, sauces, desserts, and freezing for later use.

  • Excellent for baking in tarts, muffins, and crumbles.

• Storage: Best eaten soon after picking but will keep in the fridge for 2–3 days. Freeze surplus berries for long-term storage.

• Yield: High-yielding, with mature plants producing heavy crops over a long season.

• Wildlife Benefits: Flowers attract pollinators such as bees, and ripe fruit can provide food for birds (unless netted).

• Garden Design Uses:

  • Works well in dedicated fruit beds or mixed edible gardens.

  • Compact growth habit suits smaller gardens and urban spaces.

  • Can be grown in large containers for patios or balconies with proper support.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
