Planting Rubus idaeus ‘Primeberry Autumn Fleshy’®

Rubus idaeus ‘Primeberry Autumn Fleshy’® is an autumn-fruiting raspberry selected for its large, fleshy berries and productive primocane growth. Primocane raspberries flower and fruit on canes produced during the same year, providing a harvest from late summer into autumn. The plant is self-fertile, so one specimen can bear fruit, while a row of plants will produce a larger crop. CAC denotes certified material meeting recognised standards for varietal identity and plant health.

• Choose an open, sheltered position in full sun. Light shade is tolerated, but strong light supports sweeter fruit, sturdier growth and more reliable ripening.
• Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Slightly acidic to neutral conditions are ideal for healthy root development.
• Avoid waterlogged locations, very shallow chalky ground and areas that become severely dry during summer.
• Do not plant in soil where raspberries, blackberries or related Rubus plants have recently grown. Reusing such a site can increase the risk of soil-borne disease.
• Remove perennial weeds before planting, as weeding becomes more difficult once the shallow raspberry roots have established.
• Install posts with horizontal wires to support tall or heavily laden canes. Support is particularly useful in exposed gardens.
• Water the root ball thoroughly. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the roots and position the plant at its existing growing depth.
• Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously. Space multiple plants approximately 40–60 cm apart, leaving adequate access between rows.
• Apply a 5–8 cm layer of well-rotted compost around the root area, keeping the mulch clear of the crown.

Watering, Feeding and Harvesting

Reliable moisture is important throughout active growth, particularly while flowers and berries are developing. Dry conditions may produce smaller fruit, reduced yields and weaker canes.

• Water regularly during the first growing season. Apply water deeply so it reaches the root ball and surrounding soil rather than wetting only the surface.
• Continue watering established plants during hot, dry or windy weather. Avoid repeated overhead watering because damp flowers and fruit are more vulnerable to fungal disease.
• Check container-grown plants frequently during summer. Use a large pot with drainage holes and never allow the root system to stand permanently in water.
• Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new shoots emerge. Follow the recommended application rate to avoid excessive leafy growth.
• Apply a high-potassium liquid feed during flowering and fruit development if the soil is poor or the plant is growing in a container.
• Renew the organic mulch each spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and gradually improve soil fertility.
• Remove weeds by hand rather than cultivating deeply. Raspberry roots grow close to the soil surface and are easily damaged.
• Protect ripening berries from birds with securely fitted netting, ensuring wildlife cannot become trapped.
• Harvest berries when they are fully coloured, soft and easily released from their central cores. Pick every few days during peak production.
• Handle the fleshy fruit carefully and use, chill or freeze it soon after picking. Remove damaged or mouldy berries promptly.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

As an autumn-fruiting raspberry, ‘Primeberry Autumn Fleshy’ produces its main crop on new canes. Annual pruning is therefore simpler than it is for summer-fruiting varieties.

• Cut all canes down to approximately 2–5 cm above ground level in late winter, before fresh shoots begin to emerge.
• Remove the cut stems from the growing area rather than leaving them around the crown, where they may harbour pests and diseases.
• Thin congested new growth in spring if necessary. Retain strong, well-spaced canes so that sunlight and air can reach the developing fruit.
• Tie tall canes loosely to supporting wires. Use soft ties and check them periodically to ensure they do not restrict growth.
• Remove weak, damaged or diseased shoots whenever they appear. Cut them at ground level and clean tools after working on unhealthy plants.
• Control suckers that emerge beyond the intended row by cutting them below soil level while they are young.
• Inspect regularly for aphids, spider mites, raspberry beetles and signs of cane disease. Early action helps prevent problems from spreading.
• Reduce grey mould by maintaining good spacing, watering at soil level and harvesting ripe fruit without delay.
• Yellowing leaves can indicate drought, waterlogging, nutrient shortage or root problems. Check the soil and drainage before applying additional fertiliser.
• A small early crop may sometimes develop if selected canes are retained, but cutting everything down annually provides the simplest and most consistent autumn harvest.
• With full sun, fertile soil, dependable moisture and complete winter pruning, ‘Primeberry Autumn Fleshy’ will provide vigorous growth and generous crops of substantial autumn berries.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
