Planting Rubus ‘Buckingham Tayberry’®
Rubus ‘Buckingham Tayberry’® is a vigorous, thornless tayberry producing large, elongated, dark-red fruits with a rich, aromatic flavour. A tayberry is a hybrid between a blackberry and a raspberry, combining vigorous trailing canes with soft, juicy fruit. ‘Buckingham’ is self-fertile, so one plant can crop successfully, although productive growth requires space and a strong support system.
- Choose a warm, sheltered position in full sun. Light partial shade is tolerated, but the crop may be smaller and the fruit less sweet.
- Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Slightly acidic to neutral conditions are ideal, although the plant adapts to many garden soils.
- Avoid sites where raspberries, blackberries or related plants have recently grown, as pests and soil-borne diseases may remain present.
- Install horizontal wires, a sturdy trellis or another support before planting. The long, flexible canes need tying in and should not be left trailing across the ground.
- Water the root ball thoroughly. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably and position the plant at the same depth at which it was previously growing.
- Backfill with improved soil, firm gently and water generously. Space multiple plants approximately 1.5–2.5 metres apart to allow air circulation and cane development.
- Apply a 5–8 cm layer of well-rotted compost or manure around the root area. Keep the mulch away from direct contact with the crown.
- Container growing is possible, but use a large, stable pot with drainage holes and provide a permanent support for the canes.
Watering, Feeding and Fruit Care
Consistent moisture is particularly important while the fruit is swelling and ripening. Tayberries tolerate brief dry periods once established, but drought can reduce berry size, yield and overall fruit quality.
- Water regularly during the first growing season to help the roots establish. Soak the soil thoroughly rather than applying small amounts frequently.
- Increase watering during flowering, fruit development and prolonged dry weather. Direct water towards the ground and avoid repeatedly wetting flowers and ripening berries.
- Check container plants frequently during summer. Water until excess moisture drains from the base, then empty any saucer or decorative outer pot.
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as active growth begins. A high-potassium feed can be used from flowering to support fruit development.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages abundant leafy cane growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
- Renew the organic mulch each spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil. Hand-weed carefully because Rubus plants have shallow roots.
- Protect developing fruit from birds using securely fixed netting. Ensure birds and other wildlife cannot become trapped.
- Pick tayberries when they are deep red, soft and easily detached. Harvest every few days because ripe fruit does not remain in peak condition for long.
- Handle the berries gently and use them promptly. Their soft texture makes them excellent for desserts, preserves, sauces and freezing but unsuitable for extended storage.
Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance
‘Buckingham Tayberry’ fruits mainly on canes produced during the previous year. Correct pruning separates the new replacement canes from those carrying the current crop and maintains a productive framework.
- Tie fruiting canes to one side of the support and train new canes to the opposite side. This makes harvesting and annual pruning easier.
- After fruiting finishes, cut every cane that carried berries down to ground level. Do not shorten or retain these old canes, as they will not crop well again.
- Preserve the healthy new canes produced during the current season. Tie them securely to the wires, spacing them so that light and air can reach the foliage.
- Remove weak, damaged, diseased or overcrowded new canes. Retain approximately six to eight strong canes, depending on the plant’s vigour and available space.
- In late winter, shorten excessively long side shoots if necessary while preserving the main canes intended for fruiting.
- Use clean, sharp secateurs and remove pruned material from the growing area. Good hygiene reduces the risk of cane diseases.
- Inspect regularly for aphids, raspberry beetle, spider mites and cane damage. Remove affected stems promptly if serious dieback develops.
- Watch for grey mould on ripening fruit during damp weather. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering and harvest ripe berries without delay.
- Secure canes before winter storms and replace worn ties. Use soft ties that will not cut into expanding stems.
- Remove unwanted suckers that emerge away from the main crown before they become established.
- With full sun, consistent watering, annual feeding and disciplined cane pruning, ‘Buckingham Tayberry’ will provide generous crops of distinctive, flavoursome fruit each summer
