Overview and Features

Salvia 'Love and Wishes'® is a striking, long-blooming herbaceous perennial or tender sub-shrub, part of the Wish Collection (alongside ‘Wendy’s Wish’ and ‘Ember’s Wish’). Known for its rich magenta-purple flowers and deep burgundy stems, this Salvia offers months of colour and is ideal for borders, containers, or pollinator gardens.

It produces a bushy, upright habit and blooms continuously from late spring until the first frosts, especially when deadheaded. Like other salvias, it is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in sunny, well-drained spots.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

This cultivar is easy to grow and requires minimal upkeep once established. Good drainage and sun exposure are the keys to success.

• Light Requirements:

  • Performs best in full sun (6+ hours/day)

  • Tolerates light partial shade, but may flower less profusely

• Soil Preferences:

  • Prefers moderately fertile, free-draining soil

  • Does well in sandy or loamy soil

  • Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas

• Planting Advice:

  • Plant in spring after risk of frost or in early summer

  • Space at least 60 cm apart to allow air circulation and bushy growth

  • In containers, use peat-free compost with added grit for drainage

Watering, Feeding, and Pruning

Regular watering and light feeding help support vigorous growth and long flowering. Deadheading encourages new blooms.

• Watering:

  • Water well after planting until established

  • Once mature, it is drought tolerant, needing watering only in extended dry periods

  • Avoid overwatering or soggy conditions

• Feeding:

  • Apply a general-purpose liquid feed monthly during summer

  • Mulch with compost in spring to improve soil and support new growth

• Pruning and Deadheading:

  • Deadhead regularly to extend the flowering period

  • Cut back stems in late autumn after flowering, or leave until early spring for winter protection

  • In spring, prune back to the base or healthy growth

Salvia 'Love and Wishes'® is an ideal choice for colourful planting schemes, wildlife-friendly gardens, and patio containers.

  • Mixed borders, especially in middle or back sections

  • Suitable for containers and raised beds

  • Adds height and drama in balcony or patio displays

• Companion Plants:

  • Combines beautifully with Rudbeckia, Verbena bonariensis, Gaura, Coreopsis, Nepeta, and grasses

  • Looks striking with silver or dark-leaved foliage (e.g. Artemisia, Heuchera, or Pennisetum)

• Design Tip:

  • Use in groups of 3 or more for massed impact

  • Pair with plants that contrast in foliage texture and flower shape

Hardiness and Winter Care

• Hardiness:

  • Half-hardy perennial: Hardy to around -5°C to -7°C

  • May overwinter in mild regions but may need protection elsewhere

• Winter Protection:

  • In colder areas, treat as an annual or lift and store in frost-free conditions

  • For in-ground plants, mulch heavily or cover with horticultural fleece

  • Containers should be moved to a sheltered spot or cold greenhouse

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
