Overview of Salvia ‘Salgoon Strawberry Lake’
Salvia ‘Salgoon Strawberry Lake’ is a vibrant and compact perennial from the Salgoon Series, prized for its rich raspberry-pink flowers with purple-red calyces. This cultivar is a form of Salvia x hybrida, developed for extended flowering, strong performance, and ornamental appeal in both garden beds and containers. The foliage is aromatic, green, and held on upright stems, giving the plant a neat and tidy habit.
Salvia ‘Salgoon Strawberry Lake’ typically grows to 60–75 cm in height and spread, forming a bushy mound that produces masses of flowers from late spring until the first frost. As with many salvias, it is a pollinator magnet, attracting bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects throughout the blooming season.
Sunlight, Temperature & Positioning
-
Sunlight Requirements:
-
Requires full sun for best flowering and compact growth.
-
Tolerates very light shade but may reduce the intensity of blooming.
-
-
Temperature Tolerance:
-
Hardy in milder climates, tolerating light frost (approx. -2°C to -5°C).
-
In cooler regions, may need protection or lifting over winter.
-
-
Ideal Placement:
-
Perfect for sunny borders, cottage gardens, Mediterranean planting schemes, and patio containers.
-
Performs well in mixed beds when combined with grasses, echinacea, or other salvias.
-
Soil, Watering & Feeding
-
Soil Preferences:
-
Thrives in free-draining soils that are sandy, loamy, or gravelly.
-
Dislikes heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.
-
Can adapt to poorer soils but performs best with added organic matter.
-
-
Watering Routine:
-
Water regularly during the establishment period (first 4–6 weeks).
-
Once established, the plant is moderately drought-tolerant.
-
Avoid overwatering—ensure soil dries out slightly between waterings.
-
-
Fertilising Strategy:
-
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support strong growth.
-
Supplement with a liquid feed every 3–4 weeks during peak flowering in summer for continuous blooms.
-
Avoid excessive nitrogen which can lead to leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
-
Pruning, Flowering & Seasonal Care
-
Pruning & Trimming:
-
Lightly trim in mid-summer to remove spent flowers and promote new flushes of blooms.
-
In late autumn or early spring, cut back hard to just above the base when new growth is visible.
-
Avoid pruning late in the growing season if frost is expected, to prevent damage to regrowth.
-
-
Blooming Period:
-
Prolific flowering from late spring through summer and into autumn.
-
Deadheading is optional but may improve tidiness and flowering consistency.
-
-
Overwintering Tips:
-
In milder regions, apply mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots.
-
In colder climates, grow in containers that can be brought indoors or into sheltered greenhouses.
-
Salvias can survive winters better in raised beds or sloped ground with excellent drainage.
-
Propagation, Pests & Companion Planting
-
Propagation:
-
Take softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer for identical plants.
-
Can also be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings later in the season.
-
Division is less common but possible with mature, woody plants.
-
-
Pests and Problems:
-
Generally resistant to most pests and diseases.
-
Occasionally attracts aphids or whiteflies, especially in humid conditions—treat with insecticidal soap or strong water spray.
-
Poor drainage may lead to root rot; ensure proper soil structure.
-
-
Companion Planting:
-
Pairs beautifully with nepeta, coreopsis, gaura, penstemon, and ornamental grasses.
-
Use in mixed plantings to create a long-lasting summer display.
-
Excellent as a pollinator-friendly option in wildlife gardens.
-
Design & Display Recommendations

-
