Planting Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’

Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ is a compact evergreen shrub with glossy, dark-green foliage. Deep red flower buds form during autumn and remain decorative throughout winter before opening into fragrant white flowers in spring. This male cultivar does not produce berries, but its flowers can pollinate compatible female Skimmia plants growing nearby. It is ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens and containers.

  • Choose a position in partial or full shade. Dappled light beneath trees or a site beside a north-facing or east-facing wall is particularly suitable.

  • Protect the plant from intense midday and afternoon sunlight, which can bleach the foliage and cause yellow or scorched patches.

  • Select a sheltered location away from cold, drying winds. Protection helps preserve the evergreen leaves and winter flower buds.

  • Plant in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Skimmia prefers acidic to neutral conditions and struggles in strongly alkaline or chalky ground.

  • Where the soil is unsuitable, grow ‘Rubella’ in a container filled with fresh ericaceous compost.

  • Water the root ball thoroughly before planting. Dig a hole twice as wide as the roots but no deeper than the existing root ball.

  • Position the plant with the top of its root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously.

  • Apply a 5–7 cm layer of leaf mould or composted bark, keeping it clear of the stems.

Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Skimmia ‘Rubella’ performs best where the soil remains consistently moist without becoming waterlogged. Regular watering is especially important during establishment and for plants growing in containers.

  • Water throughout the first growing season whenever the upper layer of soil begins to feel dry. Apply water slowly across the entire root area.

  • Continue watering established plants during warm, dry or windy periods. Prolonged drought may cause dull foliage, brown leaf edges and poor bud development.

  • Use collected rainwater whenever possible, particularly in hard-water areas. Repeated use of alkaline tap water can gradually increase the soil or compost pH.

  • Check container-grown plants frequently because pots dry faster than garden soil. Water thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the bottom.

  • Empty saucers and decorative outer containers promptly. Skimmia requires dependable moisture but will not tolerate roots standing permanently in water.

  • Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in spring after flowering.

  • Avoid excessive feeding or high-nitrogen fertilisers, which may encourage soft growth while reducing future flower production.

  • Renew the organic mulch each spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and support suitable soil conditions.

  • Remove weeds by hand because deep cultivation can damage the shallow roots.

  • Protect exposed container plants during prolonged severe frost by insulating the pot or moving it to a sheltered outdoor position.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

‘Rubella’ naturally develops a compact, rounded shape and normally requires very little pruning. Minimal intervention preserves its flower buds and attractive evergreen structure.

  • Remove dead, damaged, diseased, weak or crossing stems immediately after flowering in spring.

  • Lightly shorten occasional shoots that extend beyond the desired outline, cutting back to a healthy leaf or outward-facing bud.

  • Avoid pruning during autumn or winter because this will remove the decorative buds and reduce the spring flower display.

  • Do not clip the shrub routinely into a tight shape. Repeated surface trimming can produce dense outer growth and bare internal stems.

  • Remove faded flower clusters only when they become untidy. As a male cultivar, ‘Rubella’ will not produce berries after flowering.

  • Position ‘Rubella’ near compatible female Skimmia plants if berry production on those plants is desired.

  • Inspect the foliage periodically for scale insects, spider mites and vine weevil damage, particularly on container-grown specimens.

  • Yellow leaves with green veins often indicate alkaline soil, unsuitable compost or repeated watering with hard water. Correct the growing conditions before feeding.

  • Brown leaf edges may result from drought, excessive sunlight, cold wind, waterlogging or fertiliser damage.

  • Repot container plants every two or three years using fresh ericaceous compost and a pot only slightly larger than the previous one.

  • Wear gloves when handling the shrub and position it carefully around children and pets, as Skimmia is harmful if eaten.

  • With shade, acidic soil, steady moisture and limited pruning, Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ will provide glossy evergreen foliage, richly coloured winter buds and fragrant spring flowers for many years
