Solidago canadensis 'Goldkind' – Planting & Care Guide

About Solidago canadensis 'Goldkind'

Solidago canadensis 'Goldkind', commonly known as Goldenrod, is a compact, clump-forming perennial admired for its brilliant golden-yellow flower plumes that brighten the garden from late summer through autumn. Unlike taller Goldenrod varieties, 'Goldkind' has a neat, bushy habit, making it ideal for smaller gardens and mixed borders without becoming overpowering.

Growing to approximately 50–70cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, this reliable perennial produces upright stems topped with dense sprays of tiny golden flowers that create a spectacular display. The nectar-rich blooms are a magnet for bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects, providing an important late-season food source when many other flowers have finished. The flowers also make excellent additions to fresh and dried floral arrangements.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun for the best flowering display.
  • Will tolerate light partial shade.
  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Grows well in loam, sandy and clay soils with good drainage.
  • Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a light layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Solidago 'Goldkind' is a tough, low-maintenance perennial.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging during winter.
  • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Mulch annually to improve soil fertility and conserve moisture.
  • Remove weeds regularly while plants establish.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during dry weather.
  • Divide mature clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour and flowering.

Pruning

Regular maintenance helps keep plants healthy and tidy.

  • Deadhead spent flowers if self-seeding is not desired.
  • Leave flower heads in autumn to provide winter interest if preferred.
  • Remove damaged or diseased stems as needed.
  • Cut plants back to ground level in late autumn or early spring.
  • Divide overcrowded clumps every few years to rejuvenate growth.

Common Problems

Solidago 'Goldkind' is generally healthy and easy to grow.

  • Poor drainage can lead to root or crown rot.
  • Powdery mildew may occasionally develop if plants become overcrowded or experience poor air circulation.
  • Taller stems rarely require support due to the compact habit of this variety.
  • Slugs and snails may occasionally feed on young spring growth.
  • Divide mature clumps every few years to maintain healthy, vigorous plants and prevent overcrowding.

With its compact growth, vibrant golden flower plumes and long flowering season, Solidago canadensis 'Goldkind' is an excellent choice for Irish gardens. Hardy, reliable and easy to grow, it provides valuable late-season colour, supports bees and butterflies, and combines beautifully with other autumn-flowering perennials in borders, prairie-style planting and wildlife-friendly gardens
