Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet' – Planting & Care Guide
About Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet'
Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet', commonly known as Lamb’s Ear, is a low-growing evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial prized for its wonderfully soft, silvery-grey, woolly foliage.
'Silver Carpet' is particularly valued as a foliage and ground-cover plant. Unlike many forms of Lamb’s Ear, it is reluctant to flower, allowing it to maintain a neat carpet of silver leaves without becoming dominated by tall flower stems.
The velvety foliage provides excellent contrast against green and dark-leaved plants and is particularly effective along paths, at the front of sunny borders, in gravel gardens and around roses.
Planting Guide
- Choose a position in full sun for the best silver foliage.
- Light partial shade can be tolerated, but growth may be less compact.
- Plant in well-drained soil.
- Sandy, gritty and moderately poor soils are suitable.
- Avoid heavy or permanently waterlogged ground.
- Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball.
- Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container.
- Firm gently and water thoroughly after planting.
- Water regularly during the establishment period.
In wetter Irish gardens, good drainage is particularly important to keep the foliage and crown healthy over winter.
Care & Maintenance
'Silver Carpet' is an easy-care perennial once established.
- Water during prolonged dry periods while plants establish.
- Established plants have good drought tolerance.
- Avoid excessive watering.
- Remove damaged, brown or deteriorating leaves when necessary.
- Keep fallen leaves and other damp debris from accumulating around the crown.
- Little feeding is required.
- Excessively rich soil can encourage softer, less compact growth.
Pruning
Very little pruning is necessary.
- Remove old or damaged foliage in spring.
- Trim untidy growth around the edges if plants spread beyond the desired area.
- Any occasional flower stems can be removed if you want to maintain a purely silver foliage display.
- Older clumps can be divided when necessary to rejuvenate the planting.

Ground Cover
'Silver Carpet' is particularly useful where a low-growing carpet of contrasting foliage is required.
Plants gradually spread to create overlapping rosettes of silver leaves, helping to cover exposed soil and soften the edges of paths and borders.
For a continuous ground-cover effect, several plants can be planted together and allowed to gradually meet as they mature.
Seasonal Interest
Spring: Fresh, soft silver foliage develops and plants begin spreading.
Summer: Dense silvery leaves create an attractive carpet and provide excellent contrast with colourful summer flowers.
Autumn: Foliage continues providing texture and colour.
Winter: Plants may remain substantially evergreen in suitable conditions, although prolonged cold and wet weather can cause some leaves to deteriorate.
Wildlife & Garden Value
While ordinary Lamb’s Ear can produce flower spikes that attract bees, 'Silver Carpet' is primarily selected for its foliage and produces few, if any, flowers. It should therefore be considered mainly an ornamental ground-cover plant rather than a significant pollinator plant.
The wonderfully soft leaves also make it a popular addition to sensory and tactile gardens.
Common Problems
- Winter wet is the main concern, especially in heavy soil.
- Waterlogged conditions can cause crown or root rot.
- Leaves can deteriorate when they remain continually wet.
- Slugs and snails may occasionally shelter beneath the dense foliage.
- Excessively rich soil can produce soft, less attractive growth.
- Plants growing in too much shade may lose some of their strong silver colouring and compact habit.
With its soft, silvery-grey foliage and low carpet-forming habit, Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet' is an excellent choice for adding year-round texture and contrast to sunny planting schemes. Particularly effective as ground cover, path edging or at the front of borders, it is a hardy, drought-tolerant and low-maintenance perennial well suited to Irish gardens where the soil drains freely
