Stachys byzantina – Planting & Care Guide
About Stachys byzantina
Stachys byzantina, commonly known as Lamb's Ear, is a charming evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial, grown primarily for its exceptionally soft, silvery-grey, woolly foliage. The velvety leaves resemble a lamb's ear, making it a favourite for sensory gardens and children’s gardens, while its striking foliage provides excellent contrast with green and brightly coloured plants.
In early to mid-summer, upright flower spikes bearing small pink to purple flowers rise above the foliage, attracting bees and other pollinating insects. Growing to approximately 20–30cm tall (up to 45–60cm in flower) with a spread of 45–60cm, Lamb's Ear forms dense mats, making it an excellent ground cover plant.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best foliage colour and compact growth.
- Will tolerate light partial shade, although foliage may become less dense.
- Prefers well-drained soil.
- Suitable for sandy, loam or free-draining clay soils.
- Improve heavy soils with horticultural grit before planting.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Position the crown level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Avoid planting too deeply.
- Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart.
Care & Maintenance
Stachys byzantina is extremely easy to grow and drought tolerant once established.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.
- Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser if required.
- Avoid excessive feeding, which can produce lush, floppy growth.
- Keep the centre of the plant free from dead foliage.
- Avoid prolonged winter wet, as this can damage the foliage.
Pruning
Minimal pruning is required.
- Remove faded flower spikes after flowering if a tidier appearance is preferred.
- Cut away damaged, brown or decaying leaves throughout the year.
- Trim back untidy growth in early spring before new leaves emerge.
- Divide mature clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
