-
Height & spread: Typically grows 2–3m tall and wide at maturity.

Foliage: Oval, mid-green leaves turning rich yellow and orange in autumn.
-
Flowers: Long, pendulous chains of creamy-yellow bell-shaped flowers appearing in early spring before full leaf-out.

-
Uses: Ideal for woodland gardens, mixed borders, or as a specimen shrub for early-season drama.
Its early flowers bring a refreshing touch of spring when the garden is just waking up, and its autumn foliage adds warmth and richness later in the year.
Care Guide
Stachyurus chinensis ‘Celina’ is easy to grow in the right conditions, thriving in moist, fertile soil with some shelter.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in autumn or spring when the soil is workable and not waterlogged or frozen.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 2–3m apart if planting more than one.
-
Positioning: Choose a sheltered spot, away from strong winds, with partial shade or dappled light.
-
Companions: Underplant with spring bulbs, hellebores, or ferns for a woodland feel.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water well during the first growing season to help establish roots.
-
Keep soil moist, especially in dry spells, though avoid waterlogging.
-
Feed annually in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Requires minimal pruning; simply remove any dead or damaged wood after flowering.
-
If reshaping is needed, prune lightly just after blooms fade to avoid cutting off next year’s buds.
-
Mulch annually in spring to conserve moisture and enrich the soil.
Protection
-
Fully hardy but protect from cold, drying winds which may damage new shoots.
-
Avoid very exposed sites; a sheltered, partially shaded position ensures best growth and flowering.
-
Generally pest- and disease-resistant with little intervention required.
