Syringa ‘Tinkerbelle’ – A Compact Lilac with Delightful Fragrance
The Syringa ‘Tinkerbelle’ is a charming compact lilac that combines rich colour, manageable size, and a wonderfully sweet fragrance. Unlike traditional lilacs, which can become large and unruly, ‘Tinkerbelle’ has been specially bred to remain neat and compact, making it perfect for smaller gardens, patios, or even large containers. In late spring to early summer, it produces panicles of deep pink to wine-red buds that open into soft, fragrant pink flowers, filling the air with a delicious scent.
This variety is part of the Fairy Tale Series, known for reliable performance and suitability for modern gardens. With its elegant flowers, compact size, and low-maintenance care needs, ‘Tinkerbelle’ is an ideal lilac for gardeners who want the romance of lilac blooms without the bulk of larger varieties.

Planting
-
When to plant: Best planted in autumn or spring when the soil is moist and workable.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, spacing 1.5–2m apart if planting multiples.
-
Preparation: Improve heavy soils with compost and grit to improve drainage.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water regularly during the first year to help roots establish.
-
Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
-
Feed in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and more abundant flowering.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Prune lightly immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth.
-
Remove spent flower heads (deadheading) to prevent seed formation and direct energy into next year’s blooms.
-
Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as lilacs may not regenerate well.
-
Remove any suckers from the base to maintain a tidy shape.
Protection
-
Fully hardy and rarely troubled by pests or diseases.
-
May be prone to powdery mildew in late summer; plant in a spot with good airflow to reduce risk.
