Description

Taxus baccata ‘Repandens’ – Low-Growing Evergreen Elegance

The Taxus baccata ‘Repandens’, commonly known as the Creeping English Yew, is a graceful, low-growing evergreen shrub that provides year-round structure and texture in the garden. With its rich, dark-green foliage and gently spreading habit, it’s ideal for use as groundcover, in rock gardens, or for softening the edges of borders. Its neat, arching branches and tolerance of pruning make it a versatile choice for both formal and informal gardens.

Unlike the upright varieties of yew, ‘Repandens’ grows wide and low, forming elegant, dense mats of evergreen needles. It’s hardy, long-lived, and easy to maintain—perfect for adding reliable greenery and depth to any outdoor space, whether planted alone or as part of a larger landscape design.

General Information

The English yew (Taxus baccata) is one of the oldest and most traditional evergreen plants used in British gardens, prized for its resilience, longevity, and timeless beauty. The ‘Repandens’ cultivar offers all these qualities in a more compact, spreading form.

  • Habit: Low, spreading evergreen shrub with slightly arching branches.

  • Height & spread: Typically reaches 60–80cm tall and up to 3m wide over time.

  • Foliage: Dense, glossy, dark-green needle-like leaves, soft to the touch.

  • Flowers & fruit: Small, inconspicuous flowers in spring; may produce red berries if female plants are nearby.

  • Position: Thrives in full sun to deep shade.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil; tolerates chalky, sandy, or clay soils once established.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland.

  • Uses: Excellent for groundcover, sloping areas, beneath trees, or as a neat edging plant.

Its adaptability makes Taxus baccata ‘Repandens’ equally at home in modern landscapes or classic gardens, where it provides structure and evergreen texture all year round.

Care Guide

This low-maintenance evergreen is exceptionally easy to grow and well-suited to a wide range of garden conditions.

Planting

  • When to plant: Best planted in autumn or spring when soil is moist but not waterlogged.

  • Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 1–1.5m apart for groundcover.

  • Containers: Can be grown in large pots if given space to spread.

  • Companions: Pairs beautifully with heathers, ferns, and shade-loving perennials.

Watering & Feeding

  • Water regularly for the first year until roots are established.

  • Once mature, drought-tolerant and rarely needs additional watering.

  • Feed annually in spring with a slow-release general-purpose fertiliser to encourage strong, healthy growth.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Trim lightly in late summer to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.

  • Suitable for low hedging or shaping if desired, though often left unpruned for a natural look.

  • Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.

  • Very long-lived and slow-growing, requiring little attention beyond occasional tidying.

Protection

  • Fully hardy and wind-resistant, making it ideal for exposed or shaded sites.

  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging, which can damage roots.

  • Rarely troubled by pests or diseases, though ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
