Uncinia ‘Everflame’ – Striking Copper-Red Foliage for Year-Round Colour
General Information
Uncinia is a small genus of ornamental grasses native to New Zealand and South America, valued for their richly coloured foliage and graceful habit. The ‘Everflame’ variety is one of the brightest and most decorative.
-
Habit: Compact, clump-forming evergreen sedge with arching, strap-like leaves.
-
Height & spread: Typically grows 30–40cm tall and 30–45cm wide.
-
Foliage: Glossy, bronze-green leaves edged with fiery orange-red tones that intensify in cooler weather.
-
Flowers: Brown, slender flower spikes appear in summer but are mostly ornamental.
-
Seasonal interest: Evergreen with year-round colour, particularly vibrant in autumn and winter.
-
Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with brightest foliage in sunnier spots.
-
Soil: Moist but well-drained soil; tolerates a range of conditions but dislikes extreme dryness.
-
Hardiness: Hardy to around -5°C; may need protection in very cold winters.
-
Uses: Excellent for containers, mixed borders, gravel gardens, rockeries, or edging paths.
Its rich, warm tones make it perfect for providing colour contrast against silver foliage, evergreens, or cool-toned flowering plants.
Care Guide
Uncinia ‘Everflame’ is easy to care for and thrives with very little maintenance, making it a great option for gardeners of all skill levels.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or autumn, though container-grown plants can be set out year-round.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 30–40cm apart for a dense display.
-
Containers: Ideal for pots and planters; use free-draining compost with added organic matter.
-
Companions: Pairs beautifully with heucheras, grasses, sedums, or other autumn-interest plants.
Watering & Feeding
-
Keep soil consistently moist, especially in the first year.
-
Once established, moderately drought-tolerant but appreciates regular watering in long dry spells.
-
Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage lush foliage and vibrant colour.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Comb through clumps in early spring to remove dead leaves and keep the plant neat.
-
Avoid cutting back hard, as the evergreen foliage provides year-round colour.
-
Every 3–4 years, lift and divide overcrowded clumps in spring to maintain vigour.
Protection
-
Hardy in mild areas but may need winter protection in colder regions; mulch around the base or move pots to a sheltered spot.
-
Protect from excessive winter wet, especially in poorly drained soils.
-
Generally pest- and disease-free, making it a very reliable choice.
