Planting & Positioning
-
Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Blue Dessert’ is a highbush blueberry variety producing large, sweet berries in mid to late summer.
-
Best planted in full sun for maximum fruit production and flavour.
-
Will tolerate light partial shade, though cropping may be reduced.
-
Requires acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5.
-
If your garden soil is not naturally acidic, plant in a container using ericaceous (acid-loving) compost.
-
Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds, which can affect pollination and fruiting.
-
Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth as the pot.
-
Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil surface.
-
Backfill with ericaceous compost and firm gently.
-
Water thoroughly after planting and apply a mulch of pine bark or ericaceous compost to help retain moisture and maintain soil acidity.
For best fruit set, plant alongside another blueberry variety for improved cross-pollination, although ‘Blue Dessert’ can produce fruit on its own.
Watering, Feeding & Fruiting
-
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, particularly during flowering and fruit development.
-
Blueberries have shallow roots and are sensitive to drying out.
-
Water with rainwater whenever possible, as tap water can raise soil pH over time.
-
Container-grown plants will require more frequent watering, especially in warm weather.
-
Feed in early spring with a specialist ericaceous fertiliser.
-
Avoid general-purpose fertilisers that are not suitable for acid-loving plants.
-
A second light feed can be applied after fruiting to support plant health.
-
Fruit typically ripens from mid to late summer.
-
Harvest berries when fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch for best flavour.
Net plants if necessary to protect ripening fruit from birds.
Pruning, Maintenance & Seasonal Care
-
Prune in late winter while the plant is dormant.
-
Remove any dead, damaged, or weak stems first.
-
Thin out older stems at the base every few years to encourage fresh, productive growth.
-
Maintain an open centre to allow light and air circulation.
-
Avoid heavy pruning in the first two years while the plant establishes.
-
Refresh mulch annually in spring to help retain moisture and maintain soil acidity.
-
In colder areas, container-grown plants may benefit from some winter protection during severe frost.
-
Check regularly for pests such as aphids or signs of nutrient deficiency, particularly yellowing leaves caused by high soil pH.
With the correct acidic conditions, consistent moisture, and light annual pruning, Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Blue Dessert’ will reward you with attractive foliage, spring flowers, and generous crops of sweet, flavourful blueberries each summer
