Description

Planting & Positioning

  • Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Brigitta’ is a late-season highbush blueberry known for its firm, sweet berries and reliable cropping.

  • Plant in full sun for the best fruit yield and flavour.

  • Will tolerate light partial shade, but heavy shade will reduce cropping.

  • Requires acidic soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5.

  • If garden soil is not naturally acidic, grow in a container using ericaceous compost.

  • Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds to support pollination and prevent damage to blossom.

  • Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth as the pot.

  • Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil surface.

  • Backfill with ericaceous compost and firm gently.

  • Water thoroughly after planting and apply a mulch of pine bark or acidic organic matter to retain moisture and maintain soil conditions.

For improved fruit set and heavier crops, plant alongside another blueberry variety for cross-pollination.

Watering, Feeding & Fruiting

  • Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during flowering and fruit development.

  • Blueberries have shallow roots and are sensitive to drying out.

  • Avoid waterlogging, which can damage roots.

  • Water with rainwater where possible, as tap water can gradually raise soil pH.

  • Container-grown plants will need more frequent watering during warm weather.

  • Feed in early spring with a specialist ericaceous fertiliser.

  • Apply a second light feed after fruiting if required.

  • Avoid general-purpose fertilisers not designed for acid-loving plants.

  • ‘Brigitta’ produces fruit later in the season, typically from late summer into early autumn.

  • Harvest berries once fully coloured and slightly soft for the best sweetness.

Net plants if necessary to protect fruit from birds as it ripens.

Pruning, Maintenance & Seasonal Care

  • Prune in late winter while the plant is dormant.

  • Remove dead, damaged, or weak stems first.

  • Thin out older woody stems at the base every few years to encourage new productive growth.

  • Maintain an open centre to allow light and air circulation.

  • Avoid heavy pruning during the first two years while the plant establishes.

  • Refresh mulch annually in spring to conserve moisture and maintain soil acidity.

  • In colder areas, container-grown plants may need protection during severe frost.

  • Watch for signs of nutrient deficiency such as yellowing leaves, which may indicate soil pH is too high.

With proper acidic soil conditions, consistent moisture, and light annual pruning, Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Brigitta’ will provide dependable late-season harvests of firm, flavourful blueberries year after year.
