Verbena bonariensis 'Lollipop' – Planting & Care Guide
About Verbena bonariensis 'Lollipop'
Verbena bonariensis 'Lollipop' is a compact variety of the popular Purpletop Verbena, offering all the beauty of the original in a smaller, bushier form. It produces masses of airy clusters of vibrant lavender-purple flowers held on slender, upright stems from early summer until the first frosts, creating movement and colour throughout the garden.
Growing to approximately 50–70cm tall with a spread of 45–60cm, 'Lollipop' is ideal for smaller gardens, patio containers and the front or middle of borders. Unlike the taller species, it rarely requires staking and fits beautifully into mixed planting schemes. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects, making it one of the best perennials for wildlife-friendly gardens.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering display.
- Choose a warm, sheltered position with good air circulation.
- Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
- Suitable for loam, sandy and chalky soils.
- Improve heavy clay soils by incorporating compost and horticultural grit before planting.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
- Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a light mulch around the base while keeping the crown clear.
- Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart.
