Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' Care Guide

Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' is an evergreen shrub that offers year-round interest in the garden. Known for its compact size and abundant clusters of white to pink flowers, it makes a great addition to borders, hedges, or as a standalone specimen. It thrives in a variety of garden conditions and requires minimal care once established, making it a fantastic option for both beginner and experienced gardeners alike.

Growing Conditions for Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla'

    Sunlight and Soil Requirements

    • Light: Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the best flowering and compact growth, plant it in a location with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
    • Soil: This shrub is not particularly fussy about soil types but prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil. It will grow well in both chalky and loamy soils. However, it does not do well in heavy clay soils that retain too much moisture.
    • Moisture: While Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' is fairly drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering during the first few months after planting. Avoid waterlogging by ensuring proper drainage, as it does not like "wet feet" that can lead to root rot.
    • Soil pH: It prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil. Before planting, it is a good idea to test the soil pH and amend it if necessary, especially if your soil tends to be too alkaline.

    Hardiness and Growth Habit

    • Hardiness Zones: Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' is hardy in USDA zones 8-10. It can tolerate frost in milder climates, though may require some protection during severe winters in colder zones.
    • Height and Spread: This variety typically grows to about 1.5-2 meters (5-6 feet) in height, with a similar spread. It is a compact shrub that retains a neat, rounded shape without needing extensive pruning.
    • Growth Rate: Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' has a moderate growth rate and will reach its full size in about 2-3 years, making it ideal for creating quick visual impact in garden designs.

Planting and Maintenance for Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla'

How to Plant Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla'

    • Planting Time: The best time to plant this shrub is during the spring or early autumn when the weather is mild, and the soil is warm.
    • Planting Depth: Dig a hole that is about twice the size of the root ball. Position the plant so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Gently backfill the hole with soil, firming it lightly to eliminate air pockets.
    • Spacing: Space plants about 1.5 meters (5 feet) apart if you’re planting them for a hedge. For a more informal arrangement, space them about 1 meter (3 feet) apart.
    • Watering: After planting, water the shrub thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. Continue to water regularly during the first growing season, especially in dry periods, until the plant is well-established.

    Watering and Feeding

    • Watering: Water Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' deeply but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, as overwatering can lead to root rot. Once established, this plant is drought-tolerant, but regular watering during dry spells will help it remain healthy and productive.
    • Feeding: In general, Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' does not require heavy feeding. However, a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring can encourage healthy growth and a profusion of blooms. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
    • Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Organic mulch like bark or wood chips is a good option but should be kept clear of the stem to prevent moisture buildup.

    Pruning, Pests, and Winter Care

Pruning Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla'

    • Pruning Time: The best time to prune Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' is late winter or early spring before the new growth begins. This ensures that the plant has the chance to bloom in the upcoming season.
    • Pruning Techniques: Light pruning is typically all that is needed. Cut back any dead or damaged stems and remove any spent flowers to encourage fresh growth. If the shrub has grown too large, it can be lightly shaped, but avoid cutting into the old wood too heavily, as this may result in fewer blooms.
    • Deadheading: Removing spent flowers regularly can improve the overall appearance of the plant and promote a longer blooming period.

    Pest and Disease Management

    • Pests: Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' is generally resistant to pests, but occasional infestations of aphids or scale insects may occur. If this happens, treat with insecticidal soap or a natural solution such as neem oil.
    • Diseases: This shrub is susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent this. If powdery mildew does occur, treat with a fungicide labeled for use on ornamental plants.
    • Prevention: To prevent pest and disease problems, avoid over-watering and overcrowding plants. Regularly inspect the shrub for signs of pests or disease and address any issues promptly to avoid damage.

    Winter Care

    • Cold Protection: In colder regions, provide some winter protection to Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' by mulching around the base of the plant with a thick layer of straw or bark. This helps insulate the roots from extreme temperatures.
    • Winter Watering: Even during winter, ensure the plant receives some water during dry spells, but avoid watering if the soil is frozen or excessively wet.
    • Evergreen Care: As an evergreen shrub, Viburnum tinus 'Rock & Rolla' will retain its foliage through the winter months. To keep it looking healthy, remove any dead or damaged leaves during early spring pruning.
