Vinca minor in Varieties – Evergreen Groundcover with Seasonal Colour
The Vinca minor, also known as Lesser Periwinkle, is a much-loved evergreen perennial prized for its dense, trailing habit and cheerful flowers. Offered here in a mix of attractive varieties, it provides gardeners with a charming blend of colours and foliage styles. With star-shaped blooms in shades of blue, purple, white, or lavender, and neat glossy leaves that stay green all year, Vinca minor adds brightness and reliability to borders, banks, and shaded corners.
Compact and less vigorous than its relative Vinca major, Vinca minor is an excellent groundcover choice for smaller gardens or tighter spaces. It is ideal for creating a neat, weed-suppressing carpet of foliage, while its flowers bring a welcome burst of colour from spring into summer, often with repeat flushes later in the year.

Care Guide
Vinca minor is extremely low-maintenance, making it one of the easiest groundcover plants to establish.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or autumn, though container plants can be planted year-round.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 30–40cm apart for a quick carpet of cover.
-
Preparation: Enrich poor soil with compost before planting to help plants establish more quickly.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water regularly during the first growing season until roots are established.
-
Once mature, Vinca minor is drought-tolerant and usually needs little watering.
-
Feeding is rarely required; for stronger flowering, apply a balanced fertiliser in spring.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Trim back stems after flowering in summer to maintain shape and encourage new growth.
-
Cut back hard in spring if plants become too vigorous; they will regrow quickly.
-
Mulch around plants in spring with compost or bark to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Protection
-
Fully hardy, requiring no winter protection.
-
Very resilient and rarely affected by pests or diseases.
-
In smaller gardens, occasional trimming may be needed to prevent unwanted spread.
