Overview & Features

• Vitis ‘Nero’ is a hardy, dark-skinned grape variety known for its rich flavour and reliable cropping.

• Produces medium-sized clusters of deep blue to almost black grapes.

• Fruits are juicy and sweet, suitable for fresh eating and light winemaking.

• Deciduous climbing vine with attractive lobed green foliage.

• Leaves turn yellow in autumn before falling.

• Typically grows 3–5 metres in length when mature.

• Self-fertile, so a single plant will produce fruit.

• Well suited to outdoor growing in cooler climates.

This variety is valued for its good disease resistance and dependable harvests.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun for best fruit ripening and sugar development.

• Choose a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds.

• South- or west-facing walls are ideal in cooler areas.

• Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

• Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and the same depth.

• Plant slightly away from walls to allow roots access to rainfall.

• Provide strong support such as horizontal wires, pergolas, or trellis.

• Space at least 1.5–2 metres from other vines.

Good airflow and maximum sunlight improve fruit quality.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

• Keep soil evenly moist during dry spells, especially while fruit is developing.

• Reduce watering as grapes begin to ripen to concentrate flavour.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong growth.

• Apply compost annually to improve soil fertility.

• Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer.

• Grapes ripen from late summer into early autumn.

Consistent warmth and sunlight help produce sweeter, darker fruit.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Prune annually in winter while dormant to encourage fruiting wood.

• Train along horizontal wires using a cordon or fan system.

• Remove excess side shoots in summer to improve light and airflow.

• Thin clusters if necessary to improve grape size and ripening.

• Protect ripening fruit from birds with netting.

• Monitor for mildew and maintain good ventilation.

• Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
