• Vitis ‘Vanessa’ is a hardy, seedless red grape variety valued for its sweet flavour and attractive colour.

• Produces medium-sized clusters of pink-red grapes with thin skins.

• Fruits are crisp, juicy, and ideal for fresh eating.

• Deciduous climbing vine with attractive lobed green leaves.

• Foliage often turns warm shades of yellow and red in autumn.

• Typically grows 3–5 metres in length when mature.

• Suitable for training along wires, walls, pergolas, or in greenhouses.

• Self-fertile, so no additional plant is required for fruiting.

This variety is prized for its reliable cropping and good resistance to disease.

Planting & Positioning

• Plant in full sun for the best fruit ripening and sweetness.

• Choose a warm, sheltered position protected from strong winds.

• South- or west-facing walls are ideal in cooler climates.

• Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

• Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball and the same depth.

• Position slightly away from walls to allow roots to access rainwater.

• Provide strong support such as horizontal wires or pergola beams.

• Space at least 1.5–2 metres from other vines.

Grapes perform best in warm, sunny conditions with good airflow.

Watering, Feeding & Flowering

• Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots.

• Keep soil evenly moist during dry spells, especially when fruit is forming.

• Avoid excessive watering once grapes begin to ripen.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong growth.

• Apply compost annually to maintain soil fertility.

• Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer.

• Grapes ripen from late summer into early autumn.

Consistent warmth and sunlight improve fruit sweetness and colour.

Pruning, Maintenance & General Care

• Prune in winter while dormant to shape the vine and encourage fruiting.

• Train along horizontal wires using a cordon or fan system.

• Remove excess side shoots in summer to improve airflow and fruit quality.

• Thin grape clusters if necessary to improve size and ripening.

• Protect ripening fruit from birds with netting.

• Monitor for mildew and ensure good ventilation around foliage.

• Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
