Washingtonia robusta – The Elegant Mexican Fan Palm
The Washingtonia robusta, commonly known as the Mexican Fan Palm, is a tall, graceful palm tree admired for its slender trunk and dramatic crown of fan-shaped leaves. Native to north-western Mexico, this palm is widely grown in warm climates around the world and is valued for its exotic, architectural appearance.
In the right conditions, Washingtonia robusta grows rapidly, forming a tall, narrow trunk topped with a canopy of lush green fronds. While it is often associated with Mediterranean-style or tropical gardens, it can also be grown in large containers for patios and conservatories in cooler regions. For gardeners looking to add a striking focal point or a sense of holiday atmosphere, the Mexican Fan Palm is a superb choice.

-
Uses: Excellent as a specimen palm for borders, lawns, or large containers; ideal for Mediterranean, tropical, or modern garden designs.
Its tall, elegant shape and exotic crown make it a favourite for creating dramatic garden statements.
Care Guide
Washingtonia robusta is relatively easy to care for, especially when its need for warmth and drainage is met.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or early summer when soil is warm.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; allow room for the crown to spread as it matures.
-
Containers: Choose a large pot with drainage holes and use palm-specific compost.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water regularly during the growing season (spring–summer), keeping soil moist but never waterlogged.
-
Reduce watering in winter, especially for container plants kept indoors.
-
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid palm fertiliser to encourage strong growth.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Remove old, brown fronds by cutting close to the trunk, leaving healthy green ones intact.
-
Take care when handling – the leaf stems can be sharp.
-
Keep the trunk clean by trimming away dried fronds to maintain its elegant, slim appearance.
Protection
-
In mild regions, it can be grown outdoors year-round in sheltered, sunny spots.
-
In cooler areas, grow in a container and move indoors or into a frost-free greenhouse for winter.
-
Wrap outdoor palms with fleece in winter to protect the crown from frost damage.
