Planting & Positioning

• Weigelia florida ‘Alexandra’, often sold as Wine & Roses®, is a deciduous shrub valued for its deep burgundy-purple foliage and vibrant pink trumpet-shaped flowers.

• Best planted in full sun to achieve the richest leaf colour and heaviest flowering.

• Will tolerate light partial shade, though foliage colour may be less intense.

• Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to most garden soil types.

• Avoid areas that remain waterlogged, particularly during winter.

• Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.

• Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.

• Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly after planting.

• Apply a layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the stems.

• Space adequately from other plants to allow for its mature spread and airflow.

Weigelia ‘Alexandra’ works well in mixed borders, as a feature shrub, or as part of a flowering hedge.

Watering, Feeding & General Care

• Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish strong roots.

• Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from watering during prolonged dry spells.

• Ensure soil drains freely to prevent root issues.

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.

• Alternatively, apply well-rotted compost or organic matter around the base annually.

• Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich fertilisers, which may encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.

• Keep the surrounding area weed free to reduce competition for moisture and nutrients.

• Monitor young plants during hot weather to prevent stress.

Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer, with occasional lighter repeat blooms later in the season. The contrast between dark foliage and bright flowers makes this shrub particularly eye-catching.

Pruning, Maintenance & Seasonal Interest

• Prune immediately after flowering, as blooms are produced on the previous year’s wood.

• Remove spent flowering stems by cutting back to a strong pair of leaves or side shoot.

• Thin out older stems at the base every few years to encourage fresh, vigorous growth.

• Avoid heavy pruning in late autumn or early spring, as this may reduce the following season’s flowers.

• Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed.

• In colder regions, protect young plants from severe frost during their first winter.

• Weigelia is generally low maintenance and pest resistant, though occasional aphids may appear on new growth.

With proper care, Weigelia florida ‘Alexandra’ will provide striking foliage from spring through autumn and a generous display of bright pink blooms, making it a colourful and reliable addition to any garden border

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
