Description

Overview of Zantedeschia (Calla Lilies)

Zantedeschia, commonly called Calla Lilies, are elegant flowering plants cherished for their striking, trumpet-shaped blooms and lush foliage. Available in a variety of vibrant colours including white, yellow, pink, purple, and even near-black, they are versatile for use in gardens, containers, and as cut flowers.

Though often thought of as lilies, they are not true lilies and belong to the Araceae family. Depending on the variety, they may be deciduous (dormant in winter) or evergreen in mild climates.

 Light & Temperature Requirements

  • Light Needs:

    • Full sun in cooler climates.

    • Partial shade in warmer areas – harsh midday sun can scorch the leaves.

  • Temperature Range:

    • Prefer daytime temps between 15–25°C (59–77°F).

    • Not frost-hardy. In temperate zones, treat as summer bulbs or overwinter indoors.

  • Seasonal Dormancy:

    • Deciduous types will naturally die back in autumn; this is normal and should not be mistaken for plant death.

 Watering & Humidity

  • Watering Routine:

    • Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season (spring–summer).

    • Avoid waterlogging – excellent drainage is essential.

    • Reduce watering after blooming; allow the soil to dry out as the plant enters dormancy.

  • Humidity Preferences:

    • Moderate humidity is ideal.

    • In dry indoor environments, occasional misting or a pebble tray may help.

 Soil & Feeding

  • Soil Type:

    • Rich, well-draining soil is key.

    • Mixes with added organic matter (like compost or well-rotted manure) work best.

  • Feeding Schedule:

    • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during active growth.

    • Stop fertilising once blooming ends and foliage begins to yellow.

 Flowering Tips

  • Bloom Time:

    • Typically bloom from late spring to early autumn.

    • Indoor or greenhouse conditions may extend blooming.

  • Deadheading:

    • Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms and prevent seed development.

  • Rest Period:

    • After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally before lifting or repotting bulbs for dormancy.

 Container & Garden Planting

  • Ideal Uses:

    • Excellent for patio pots, borders, pond edges, or as houseplants in bright rooms.

  • Container Tips:

    • Use a deep container with ample drainage holes.

    • Avoid shallow pots – roots grow downward and need space.

 Common Issues & Solutions

  • Yellowing Leaves:

    • Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.

  • No Blooms:

    • May be due to insufficient light, overcrowded bulbs, or lack of nutrients.

  • Pests/Diseases:

    • Watch for aphids, spider mites, and fungal issues like botrytis.

    • Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering.

❄️ Overwintering Care

  • In Colder Climates:

    • Dig up tubers after the foliage dies back.

    • Store in a cool, dry place (5–10°C) in peat or dry compost.

  • In Warmer Climates:

    • May be left in the ground with a thick mulch cover
