Overview and Appearance

Zantedeschia, often referred to as Calla Lilies, are striking, tuberous perennials prized for their elegant, funnel-shaped flowers (technically known as spathes) and glossy, arrow-shaped foliage. Available in a broad range of colours—from classic white and yellow to vivid pinks, purples, oranges, and near-black—they bring dramatic flair to garden beds, borders, and containers.

Zantedeschia varieties include both hardy types (such as Zantedeschia aethiopica) and tender hybrids used mainly for summer bedding and indoor floral displays. Most flower from late spring through summer, and their blooms are long-lasting both in the garden and as cut flowers.

Planting and Growing Conditions

Zantedeschia thrive when given the right conditions and care. Planting time and location are crucial for healthy growth and flowering.

• Planting Time:

  • Plant tubers in spring, once risk of frost has passed.

  • Start indoors in pots for earlier blooms.

• Positioning:

  • Prefer full sun to light shade (especially in warmer regions).

  • Best flowering occurs in bright, indirect light for indoor plants.

• Soil:

  • Require moist, fertile, well-drained soil.

  • Enrich with compost or organic matter before planting.

• Spacing:

  • Plant tubers about 10–15 cm deep and 30 cm apart.

• Watering:

  • Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.

  • Reduce watering after flowering to encourage dormancy.

• Feeding:

  • Feed every 2–3 weeks during active growth with a high-potash fertiliser.

  • Stop feeding once foliage begins to die back.

Seasonal Care and Maintenance

With proper care, Zantedeschia can thrive year after year, whether in borders, containers, or as part of floral displays.

• Deadheading:

  • Remove spent flowers to tidy the plant and promote further blooms.

• Lifting and Storing (Tender Varieties):

  • In colder areas, lift tubers in autumn before the first frost.

  • Clean and store in a dry, cool, frost-free place until spring.

• Hardy Varieties:

  • Can be left in the ground in mild climates.

  • Apply a mulch in winter to protect from hard frosts.

• Container Care:

  • Use a loam-based compost with added grit for drainage.

  • Ensure pots don’t dry out during the growing season.

• Pests and Diseases:

  • Watch for slugs, snails, aphids, and botrytis (grey mould).

  • Avoid overhead watering and ensure good airflow to reduce fungal risk.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
